Day 1: Arrivals & settling in
Liz and your driver will meet you at Rome Fiumicino airport (FCO) for minibus transfer to Allerona — about a 2-hour drive. Along the way, we’ll give you an introduction to the week ahead.
  • Check into your rooms and find lunch waiting, and have a few hours to rest and chill. This is your home for the week.
  • We’ll take an early evening tour of Allerona, where you’ll learn about the history of the village and some of its special places and hidden corners.
  • We’ll enjoy a welcome aperitivo, followed by dinner in a private cantina in town

Accommodations: A private room in our Allerona guesthouse
Meals: Welcome lunch, dinner

Today, we’ll spend time foraging wild foods, visiting a historic olive oil mill and a small batch winery.
  • Depending on the weather, we’ll get an early start and head out with a local tartufaio (truffle hunter) and his dogs, and watch as these specially trained pups sniff out and retrieve Umbria’s “black gold,” — pungent, flavorful truffles. (Note that we may swap this activity with foraging for mushrooms or wild asparagus.)
  • After our truffle hunt, we’ll head to a neighboring village for an olive oil tasting and lunch in a historic oil press, where the millstones were once turned by mules.
  • From there, we’ll walk a few yards to the winery of our friend Paolo, who shares our commitment to revitalizing Umbria’s historic villages.
  • Free time after lunch to rest and relax
  • Tour of a village palace, the ancestral home of a local family, followed by tasting of local olive oil, wine and other products, including a bruschetta-making lesson.

Accommodations: A private room in our Allerona guesthouse
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

On this full day, we’ll get to know Orvieto, the beautiful medieval city with Etruscan roots and a magnificent 14th-century cathedral. On the 20-minute ride to Orvieto, we’ll explain a little of the city’s history (and maybe a little about how Liz and Paolo met here!)
  • We’ll meet our guide for a tour of Orvieto’s centro storico (historic center) followed by a visit to the Duomo.
  • Lunch at our favorite trattoria in Orvieto
  • Free time after lunch to rest and relax.
  • After lunch, we’ll visit one of Orvieto’s many underground caves, carved out over the millennia for storage, shelter and raw materials.
  • Our last stop is at one of the most prestigious wineries in Umbria, where we’ll sample Orvieto Classico wine in a 13th century church and toast to a breathtaking view of Orvieto.
  • Early evening return to Allerona, with snacks at our guesthouse.

Get ready for goats! Today, we’ll visit a cheese farm, pet some goats and sample delicious cheese, before heading to another premium winery for lunch.

  • We’ll then head with Tano to one of the most awarded family owned wineries in Umbria for a tour of the vineyards and cellar, followed by a typical local lunch with wine pairings.
  • have lunch at Civita, then stop for a fantastic photo op of Orvieto.

  • At lunch, we’ll dine on the delicious food we prepared earlier, followed by a grappa tasting.
  • After some free time in the afternoon, we’ll head to another of our favorite wineries, where the cellars were built by the ancient Etruscans.
  • Following a wine tasting with local cheese and salumi, we’ll head back to Allerona.
  • In the evening, we’ll provide snacks, or you can dine on your own at our restaurant in town.

  • We’ll end our walk at a cozy, wooded osteria, for a lunch of traditional Umbrian specialties and local wine.
  • After lunch, we’ll visit a nearby farm and wine estate, whose centerpiece is a 13th century watchtower. We’ll tour the vineyard and sample their wines on a panoramic terrace, with the rolling hills of Umbria and Tuscany unfurled in every direction.
