Our “Invitation to Umbria” is our shorter mini-tour that sticks close to Allerona and includes some of our guests’ favorite experiences. This tour runs roughly once per month, and depending on the season, may include harvest activities or visits to seasonal festivals. It’s a great option for guests who are already planning to be in Italy and want to spend a few days in the Umbrian countryside.

Please note: Tours can be booked on-demand and require a minimum of four guests.

Day 1: Arrivals and town tours

Liz and your driver will meet you at the Orvieto train station, serviced by trains from Rome, Florence, and points north. We’ll coordinate pick-up times and help with train schedules. On the 20-minute drive to Allerona, we’ll give you an introduction to the next few days.

  • Get settled into your rooms, then join us for a welcome lunch of locally sourced charcuterie and other snacks.
  • After lunch, we’ll take a brief walking tour of Allerona to learn about the history of the medieval village, and some of its special places and hidden corners.
  • In the afternoon, our driver will return us to Orvieto, where we’ll walk around and get an overview of the hill town, then enjoy a pre-dinner aperitivo (outside, weather permitting), followed by dinner in our favorite trattoria.

Accommodations: A private room in a comfortable guesthouse in Allerona
Meals: Welcome lunch, dinner

Today, we’ll get a taste of rural life and traditional Umbrian cooking, family style.

  • Depending on the season, we’ll pick olives or grapes, or go mushroom or truffle hunting (weather permitting)
  • Bring your appetites to a private lunch, prepared and hosted by Paolo’s mom, Franca, and sister, AnnaRita. Friends who’ve visited us recall “lunch with Franca” as the highlight of their trips.
  • Free time after lunch to rest and relax.
  • Tour of a village palace, the ancestral home of a local family, followed by a tasting of local olive oil, wine, and other products, paired with a bruschetta-making lesson.

Accommodations: A private room in a comfortable guesthouse in Allerona
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, light dinner

Weather permitting, we’ll spend most of the day outdoors, learning about the ancient Etruscans, soaking in thermal baths and learning about foraged foods.

  • We’ll get a late start, and join our friend Adio mid-morning for a two-hour hike and foraging lesson in the Umbrian macchia, or bush, and have lunch at a cozy osteria in the woods (bosco).
  • After lunch, we’ll travel to San Casciano dei Bagni for a tour of the major Etruscan and Roman archaeological site currently being excavated.
  • After touring the site, we’ll head up the hill to take a dip in the thermal pools of a luxury spa, where water bubbles from underground at a constant 104 degrees F.
  • This evening, it’s pizza party time as we get ready to say arrivederci!

Accommodations: A private room in a comfortable guesthouse in Allerona
